I hit the ball maybe a few yards farther at first, but that was it. This was probably just from going from a nice smooth, controlled swing to swinging out of my shoes! Either way, my distance had certainly leveled off.
I came up against more and more golfers who could bomb it at least as far as me, if not farther. My short game was sharp, but so was everyone else's.
Every time I played a tournament I became increasingly more aware that to reach the next level I was going to have to increase my distance. Not just with my driver, but with my woods and irons as well.
It made total sense to me. Almost every good player, and certainly most great players hit the ball a mile. If I could hit wedge into par 5s like Tiger then I could score lower and win everything, right?
Of course that's the answer... I just had no idea how to do it...
After going through that experience, I realized the problem I had wasn't my swing technique or equipment. Those were dialed in. It was actually my swing speed.
No matter how good those two things were, if I didn't increase my swing speed then I would never hit it any farther.
As I was standing there trying to figure out what to do, I had an idea...
I had to start working out. I saw everyone from football players to baseball players getting stronger, running faster, hitting more home runs, etc from working out... Why not golf?
The first thing I tried of course was lifting weights, but the problem I found was that most (if not all) workout programs I found was just some form of a bodybuilding style workout. So then I tried to find some more golf specific workouts, but they didn't seem to really work either.
I was beginning to think that maybe working out just doesn't really work for golfers for some reason, until...
And that's when I finally tried approaching my golf specific training like an athlete, especially an athlete that plays a rotational sport.
What would an athlete do to get faster? They would do speed training!
